GENERAL Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL QUESTIONS COMPUTER/TECHNOLOGY CONDUCTING RESEARCH
When may I come to the library? In the mornings before school, during your lunch block, after school Tuesday-Thursdays until 3:45, or during any class period WITH a pass from your teacher (no more than 2 students from class at a time)
How many books may I check out at a time? 2 fiction, 3 nonfiction, 1 biography
Do you make copies? yes, $0.10 per page
Does it cost to print something from the computer? no, as long as it's for school; when printing from the Internet you should ALWAYS use a print-friendly link and if there's not one you MUST copy and paste your information into a Word document in order to print
Where can I get a current event? if you'll look on the home page of the library Web site there are links to National and State newspapers, remember to use the print-friendly link to print a current event
How do I get a magazine article from MAGNOLIA? There's a link to MAGNOLIA in the upper right hand corner of the library Web site. Which database do I use? Remember Academic Search Premier is an all around general database that is great for most all research topics; also, you might try MAS Ultra (specifically intended for high school) or MasterFile. How do I get to the database? Where's the link? On the home page of MAGNOLIA, you will have access to a list of all the databases alphabetically or you can click on the first letter of the database name you wish to search. When you click on one of the subjects that are listed, MAGNOLIA recommends several databases to you based on your topic.
How do I find an article? How do I conduct a search in Academic Search premier or one of the other databases? Alright, your search box is at the top center next to the blue circle with EBSCOhost in it. ALWAYS check FULL TEXT. Notice you have an option on the right-hand side for "number of pages." I'd recommend conducting your search without entering anything in that box and see what kind of results you get. If you get thousands of hits, then click the blue "advanced search" link underneath your search box (at the top of your results page) and limit the number of pages to LESS THAN some number. I'd say less than 15 pages. Even if you don't need 15 pages (and you DON'T) you can copy and paste bits of a longer article ... just be sure to get the bibliography information so you can site your source. Also, if you do click "advanced search," you're going to have to check full text again and any other options you had previously selected.
How do I print my article from MAGNOLIA or EBSCOhost? When you click the TITLE of your article, you will notice along the top left a link for PDF or HTML full text.
How do I access MAGNOLIA from home? Click ACCESS MAGNOLIA RESOURCES FROM HOME in the top right-hand corner of the MAGNOLIA home page. See Mrs. Kemp or your English teacher for the username (password.) If you click anything else and it asks for a username/password, the one we give will NOT work. It only works when you click the Access Resources From Home link. Remember, there's a link to MAGNOLIA at the top right-hand corner of the library Web site which is easy to find because it's www.quitmanhighschoollibrary.com
