COMPUTER/TECHNOLOGY Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL QUESTIONS COMPUTER/TECHNOLOGY CONDUCTING RESEARCH
Does it cost to print something from the computer? no, as long as it's for school; when printing from the Internet you should ALWAYS use a print-friendly link and if there's not one you MUST copy and paste your information into a Word document in order to print.
Why would I need a jump drive? If you need a way to transport you computer files from home to school, then a jump drive is the way to go. A jump drive is a mega floppy disk! A floppy normally holds 1.44mb and a jump drive can hold a whole gig or more! For school I would recommend you purchase a 1Gb jump drive because you can get one for about ten bucks. You can get a 512 Mb, but you're going to pay almost the same for it and will have half the storage space. Also, see my blog post here on jump drives.
How do I put a header on my paper with the page number and my name? See my blog post here and scroll until you find the right entry!
Why won't my computer print to the printer? (in the library or in the library computer lab?) More than likely you aren't logged into Novell. Your computer doesn't speak to the printer. Novell does. Go to start, programs, Novell, Novell login. Click ok. Then print again, but just once. If your job still won't print, save your work and restart the computer. Make sure you click "OK" on the Novell login screen. Try printing again. If it still will not print, ask Mrs. Kemp or Mrs. Heidelberg for assistance!
May I save my work to the computer in the library or in the library computer lab? Well, you may, but keep in mind students are using the computers throughout the day. Saving your work to the computer isn't the smartest way to save your work. Invest in a jump drive. Also, if you save your work in the computer lab, you run the risk of not being able to use that computer when you need to retrieve your work. Another class may be using the lab and you may not be able to use the computer or the lab may be locked and you may not be able to get into the computer lab to retrieve your files. Invest in a jump drive.
Why can't we use floppies to save our work? Jump drives are much more reliable than floppies. For some reason library computers do not read "A" drives well at all. If you bring your work to school on a floppy, be prepared to not be able to open that floppy drive on library computers. Invest in a jump drive.
