Getting there
Go to
www.quitmanhighschoollibrary.com and click the MAGNOLIA link at the top
right.
Password/Username
If accessing MAGNOLIA from a public school or public
library a password is not needed.
From all other locations you MUST click “Access MAGNOLIA
Resources Home” at the top right.
The password/username is magn0897 and that is a
zero, not a capital “o” !
Where to go when you get there
After logging into MAGNOLIA, you can go one of two ways:
- You immediately land on the “K-12” page and it has a
“Database A-Z List” with the letters of the alphabet underneath. Click the
letter that corresponds to the first letter in the name of the database you
want (see list below) and then click the name of the database.
- Or, there’s a link for “High School Resources” toward
the upper right and you can click on that. You’ll find links to all of the
following resources on that page.
Finding what you need – ALWAYS check FULL TEXT when
searching in EBSCOhost
- Magazine or Journal articles
- Academic Search Premier - (always check
“full text”)
- Student Research Center - (check the type
of information source you want included in your results)
- Books
- Book Collection - (click Advanced Search
underneath the search box and find the box for “Publication Type” -
select “book” and always check the box for “full text”)
- History Reference Center - (click Advanced
Search underneath the search box and find the box for “Publication Type”
- select “book” and always check the box for “full text”)
- Student Research Center - (check the
type of information source you want included in your results)
- Literary Criticism sources
- Literary Resource Center - (type in your
topic and click “Browse Works”)
- Encyclopedia
- you should NOT be using an encyclopedia as a
source if you’re in high school, but if you do need one DON’T use
Wikipedia use Encyclopedia Americana (link on High School
Resources page or scroll to the bottom of the K-12 page and click
Grolier
- Biographies
- not on the High School Resources page,
- on the K-12 page scroll to the very bottom and
click Wilson, then click Biographies Plus Illustrated
What’s with the results list? (EBSCOhost databases)
- Summary of the article – click the TITLE of the
article and look for the abstract – that’s your summary
- HTML Full Text or PDF – As long as HTML Full
Text appears for your article on the results list, you’ll be able to get the
whole article usually on the same page as the abstract (if not, then click
the words HTML Full Text). If the article you need is only available in PDF
then you’ll HAVE to click PDF to get the entire article to appear. You can
get the summary of that article the same way – click the title of the
article on the results list. You just won’t see the whole article unless
you click PDF.
- Printing – Be smart and click the picture of
the little printer at the top of your article … saves you paper and ink and
makes your librarian happy
- Folder options – You can add all the articles
you want (or the ones you want to look at more closel) to a folder by click
the “add to folder” option on the results list. To retrieve them click the
Folder link at the very top right on the dark blue skinny menu line. This
is a really, really handy little feature.
- Citations – If you’re not using a citation
maker already, then EBSCOhost will create your official citations for you.
Click the print button for you article, make sure you uncheck full text and
check the box for citation format, choose the format you’re using (MLA, APA,
Chicago/Turabian, etc.) and click Print … then copy your Works Cited
citation and save it somewhere safe!
- Creating an account – You can create an account
in EBSCOhost by clicking “Sign in to my EBSCOhost” link at the top right on
that dark blue skinny menu line. You’ll need an email account to do this.
What this does is allow you to save what you place in your folder. When you
come back later and sign in to your EBSCOhost account, the stuff in your
folder will still be there. Nice, very nice.
