·        how to use the print, email, folder, and save features in EBSCOhost

Option 2: Specific Magazines/Journals – 2 library lab days

1 class period lab instruction with guided & individual practice

1 additional lab period for class assignment

The purpose of the workshop is to teach students how to locate, access, and print magazine/journal articles from specific magazines/journals using EBSCOhost via MAGNOLIA.

Teacher prep:  Students should be given an assignment that requires them to locate and use at least one magazine/periodical article.

Workshop details:  Students will learn:

·        how to locate a specific magazine/journal in EBSCOhost

·        how to locate articles in a specific magazine/journal

·        how to obtain lists of articles within one specific issue of a certain magazine/journal

·        how to locate & use article abstracts to help choose appropriate articles

·        how to use the print, email, folder, and save features in EBSCOhost

·        how to use the print feature to help create appropriate MLA citations

For example, students can search EBSCOhost and get a list of all articles in the January 2008 issue of Scientific American.  From the list students can pull up and read each article listed.  This is possible by single or multiple consecutive issues of a magazine/journal.  Another example: students locate articles on specific topics from one particular magazine/journal.  This might be beneficial to science or history teachers who want students to report on a current event and want to require that the articles come from specific journals. This might also be an alternative source for current event assignments normally taken from newspapers or online news sites.
