WIKIS – 3 library lab days

2 class periods direct instruction

The purpose of the workshop is to provide students several options to learn through interactive technology: discussion boards; individual or group wiki pages (simplified web pages); posting images, documents, PowerPoints; etc.

Teacher prep:  Prerequisite: All students must have a working email address. Teacher will need to meet with librarian for at least 1 prep period to set up teacher wiki space and to decide on the assignment. Students will need usernames that do NOT include last names.  Using a system that helps the teacher quickly identify the students would make grading easier, but that is a personal preference … just be sure to have them decide on usernames BEFORE this class day.  They will also need a password they can remember!  (I suggest you make a list of the usernames.)

Workshop details:  Students will create a wiki account and become a member of teacher’s wiki space. Students will learn how to upload images, documents, and slideshows to the wiki. They will also learn how to post to a discussion board topic.  The first wiki assignment should be a simple one because initial instruction will take at 2 class periods during which students will:

• post simple text to a wiki page
• upload a sample image to a wiki page
• upload a document to a page
• post to a discussion thread

Product:

• sample post for each student including simple text to a wiki page, sample image, Word document uploaded to a wiki page, and a post to a discussion thread
• if required, a specified number of responses to other student posts
• completed project required by the teacher
